Rescue and Refinish an IKEA Pine Dresser

Have you ever felt that a piece of furniture can become a member of the family? Last year I shared a story about another dresser, and this season I’m tackling a much more neglected piece. This battered Ikea pine dresser has traveled across the Atlantic like the other one and spent most of its life here in Greece, although in this case the journey left it worse for wear. In this post I’ll show how I brought an Ikea pine dresser back to life.

This dresser had been used by two very energetic boys who treated it like a playground: climbing on it, jumping off it and generally subjecting it to rough play. As you can see, it took quite a beating—nicks, scratches and a few broken joints. We reassembled parts of it with screws; while Ikea furniture isn’t always the sturdiest, this piece is primarily solid pine and deserved a second chance.

Faced with the choice of keeping it or turning it into firewood, we decided to try and save it. The drawers needed realigning and several surfaces required attention, but the solid pine construction made restoration worthwhile.

I had a lovely deep green chalk paint on hand—my husband’s favorite sports color—so I decided to start with that. The paint I used is called Enchanted from Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint by DecoArt.

My original idea was to create an ombré effect, making each drawer slightly darker toward the bottom. After applying the first full coat, however, the dresser felt too heavy and dark. To balance the tone, I mixed some white into the Enchanted color, lightening the shade and applying a second coat to give the piece more depth and visual softness.

Once the paint dried I started distressing and sanding to reveal hints of the pine beneath. Sanding after painting—not before—helped the finish feel incredibly smooth, almost buttery, and it emphasized the contrasts between painted areas and the exposed wood. I experimented with distressing in selected places to create a balanced, lived-in look.

After distressing and light sanding, I applied Americana Decor Cream Wax to the lower half first to see how the wax would affect the color and sheen. The wax slightly darkened and enriched the paint while also sealing and protecting the surface. I then waxed the rest of the dresser for a uniform protective finish and subtle sheen.

The top was sanded back to expose the worn pine and then given a final layer of wax to protect the surface while preserving its character. The worn marks and scratches on the top aren’t flaws in my eyes; they tell the story of the dresser and add to its charm.

One of the pleasant surprises was how well the original knobs complemented the refreshed finish. I briefly considered replacing them, but putting the original hardware back gave the piece a cohesive, familiar look.

Close-up views show where the paint meets the exposed wood and where subtle distressing adds dimension. The waxed finish provides a soft sheen that invites a hand to run across the surface, and those small imperfections now feel intentional and beautiful rather than merely worn.

It’s not perfect—drawer gaps remain and there are still dings and dents—but it’s a huge improvement. The dresser now has renewed character and presence in the room, and even my husband approves.

After the makeover, the dresser sits proudly and feels as though it belongs. Restoring furniture like this is a satisfying mix of practical repair and creative expression. I’m already thinking about painting an old bed in a matching color to create a coordinated set. Would you have kept this piece and given it new life, or would you have passed it on?
