Christmas in July Blog Hop: Repurposed Rustic Wood Slices and Year-Round Ideas
Welcome to the final Wednesday of our Christmas in July Blog Hop. I’ve been co-hosting this event with a talented group of bloggers, and we’ve shared a variety of festive projects to inspire your holiday crafting. Over the last few weeks I’ve been revisiting DIY projects that can pull double duty—festive for the holidays but useful year-round. Previously I repurposed a broken mirror into a vase base and transformed old Barbie paddles. This week I’m sharing an older favorite from the blog archives: repurposed rustic wood slices.
Why I Love Repurposing
I never stop at a single holiday look. My goal is to get the most mileage from each creative project by designing it with multiple uses in mind. A decoration that can shift from Christmas to everyday décor gives you more value and reduces seasonal clutter. The rustic wood slices are a perfect example: simple, inexpensive, and easy to adapt.
Project Overview: Rustic Wood Slices
These wood slices were decorated using Christmas cookie cutters as stencils to trace shapes onto the wood. I painted over the traced outlines with black paint for a bold graphic look, then hung the slices on the wall with twine. The result is a clean holiday display that’s both rustic and modern. Because the design is simple and neutral in color, it’s easy to transition these pieces into year-round decor.
To adapt the wood slices for seasonal or permanent displays, consider swapping out ribbon or twine, changing the paint color, or adding removable embellishments. These small adjustments let you reuse the same bases for different holidays or everyday decorative schemes.
How to Repurpose for Year-Round Use
- Neutralize for everyday: Use muted paints or stain to tone down holiday-specific silhouettes. A simple chalkboard paint treatment lets you write seasonal messages, quotes, or menu notes.
- Swap hardware: Replace twine with decorative ribbon, jute, or small picture hooks depending on where you display them.
- Create functional pieces: Turn wood slices into trivets, coasters, or small shelves for lightweight items by adding a protective finish.
- Layer and combine: Pair several slices of different sizes on a gallery wall, or stack them to create a centerpiece base for candles and botanicals.
I’m grateful to everyone who joined the Christmas in July Blog Hop and contributed beautiful projects. It’s been a joy to browse your ideas and see how creative this community can be. If you saved a few of these projects for later, now is a great time to experiment so that the holidays feel less hectic six months from now.
