How to Make Chocolate Orange Rice Krispies Treats

These no-bake chocolate Rice Krispies treats are very quick to prepare. The active time is under ten minutes; the fridge does the rest of the work while the treats set.

1. Grease a baking dish roughly 20–30 cm square or rectangular to act as your mould.

2. Melt the chocolate, butter and golden syrup together. You can do this safely over a pan of simmering water using a heatproof bowl (bain-marie), or melt the chocolate in short bursts in the microwave and warm the butter and syrup together in a small saucepan. Stir until smooth.

3. Add the Rice Krispies to the melted chocolate mixture and fold gently until every flake is evenly coated.

4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared dish, pressing down and smoothing the surface with a spatula so the mixture is compact and even.

5. Cover with cling film or foil and chill in the fridge for a few hours or overnight until firm. Once set, cut into 12 portions and enjoy.

Decorating Your Chocolate Orange Rice Krispies

You can finish these treats in several ways depending on how fancy you want them to look. A full chocolate coating and a few toasted marshmallows make for a decadent bar. If you prefer something lighter, drizzle a little melted milk chocolate across the top for contrast and a professional finish.

A writing chocolate tube (chocolate writer) is handy for neat lines, but any melted chocolate will work. For less fuss and fewer dishes, use a teaspoon to drizzle melted chocolate over the squares for a rustic effect.

What Equipment You’ll Need

No special kit is required since this is a no-bake recipe. Basic kitchen tools are enough:

  • Saucepan (for the bain-marie or for warming syrup and butter)
  • Spatula for mixing and pressing the mixture into the dish
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Greased baking or Pyrex dish (around 28.5 cm x 21 cm works well)

Alternative Ingredient Options

If you don’t have golden syrup, you can substitute by melting marshmallows with the butter to bind the cereal, or try agave syrup or honey for a different flavour profile. You can also swap the chocolate orange for another flavoured chocolate or add a pinch of sea salt to enhance the chocolate taste.

Storage Tips for Chocolate Orange Rice Krispies

Store these Rice Krispies treats in an airtight container to keep them fresh and to prevent them from going stale. I like to refrigerate them for up to five days so they have a firmer bite, although they rarely last that long in my kitchen!
