Refurbishing a Well-Worn Coffee Table

Having children means furniture endures a lot of wear and tear. Toys, spills and everyday activity can leave scratches, dents and discoloration that make a once-loved piece look tired. Instead of replacing a solid wood coffee table, you can upcycle it—sanding, refinishing and repainting—to achieve a fresh, farmhouse-style result without spending a fortune.

Years ago I used a vintage trunk as a coffee table, which worked well but felt temporary. I eventually found a traditional wood coffee table and asked my partner to shorten the legs to coffee table height. The table had been stained a reddish-orange tone that was fashionable at the time, but over the years it became scratched, cracked and overwhelmingly orangey in appearance.

After a full sanding, I uncovered a pleasant surprise: the tabletop frame was a lighter, different wood than the top surface. Rather than trying to match or darken it, I embraced the contrast. The result is a tri-tonal finish that looks intentional and adds character—exactly the kind of happy accident that elevates a DIY project.

Materials Needed for This Coffee Table Upcycle

  • Old solid wood coffee table
  • Orbital sander and a selection of sandpaper grits
  • Drop cloth and clean dust cloths
  • Clear varnish or polyurethane (water-based recommended for less odor)
  • Paint brush or foam applicator
  • Black chalk-style paint for legs or trim

Step-by-Step: How to Refurbish a Coffee Table

1. Clear and sand: Remove dirt and previous finishes with an orbital sander, working from coarse to fine grits until the surface is smooth. Wipe away dust with a tack cloth before further steps.

2. Evaluate wood tones: If sanding reveals different woods or tones, decide whether to unify them with stain or highlight the natural contrast. I chose to preserve the blonde frame and top grain because it added warmth and depth.

3. Apply varnish: Use a clear, colorless varnish (I used one with a hint of yellow for warmth) to protect and enhance the natural grain. Multiple thin coats work better than a single thick coat—expect to apply several coats and allow sufficient drying time between each. In my case the top absorbed several coats over about two weeks before it stopped soaking in the finish.

4. Paint and distress legs: For a farmhouse touch, paint the legs and lower apron with black chalky paint and lightly distress them to let the natural wood peek through. This creates a pleasing contrast between the dark base and the warm, varnished top.

5. Final assembly and styling: After the varnish cures and any paint has fully dried, reattach legs if needed and place the table back in your living room. The combination of black paint, reddish undertones and the blonde natural wood creates a balanced, intentional tri-color result.

By choosing to enhance the wood grain with a clear finish instead of re-staining everything darker, the table’s unique grain patterns and darker mineral streaks became visible—details that were hidden under the old stain. The finished piece feels both rustic and refined, fitting well with farmhouse, cottage or eclectic interiors.

One last look at the dramatic before-and-after transformation: the original orange-toned finish looked dated and worn, while the refinished, color-contrasted coffee table now feels fresh, timeless and durable.
