A Special Pillow Made from an Old Sweatshirt
This project is especially dear to me. I transformed an old sweatshirt into a meaningful gift for my daughter’s closest friend — a small keepsake they can hold onto even if distance separates them in the years ahead.
Over the years I have turned several cherished tees and tops into pillows instead of discarding them. Repurposing clothing into decorative pillows is a simple, sustainable approach that preserves memories. These pillows are personal, practical, and full of sentiment.
Why a Sweatshirt Pillow?
My daughter had a sweatshirt she no longer wore, but it was still in very good condition. Rather than donate it or throw it away, we decided to turn it into a pillow. She wanted the pillow to be a gift for her best friend — a reminder of their friendship for years to come. A pillow made from a loved piece of clothing carries far more meaning than a new, anonymous item.
Materials and Tools
- Old sweatshirt in good condition
- Pencil or fabric chalk for marking
- Sewing needle and strong thread (or a sewing machine)
- Fiberfill or soft stuffing (optional if using the sleeves as stuffing)
- Buttons or other small decorative accents
- Scissors
Step-by-Step Process
1. Lay the sweatshirt flat and lightly sketch the pillow’s outline with a pencil or fabric chalk. Choose the size and shape that suits the design on the front.
2. Fold the sweatshirt so the sleeves are tucked inside the body. In this project I used the sleeves as internal stuffing, sewing them into place so they would stay put and provide natural loft.
3. Tuck the hood in and fold the garment to the marked size. Pin or hold the layers in place and use a visible but tidy cross-stitch or running stitch along the top edge. I stitched both front and back seams to make the pillow durable.
4. Add extra stuffing if needed to achieve the desired firmness, then close the bottom with the same stitching technique. Leaving the sleeve openings inside creates a fuller, cushioned feel without introducing synthetic fill, though you can always add fiberfill for additional loft.
Finishing Touches
To give the pillow a polished look, I added several buttons across the bottom where it seemed a bit plain. Buttons can be purely decorative or help secure seams. As a bonus, I left one hand opening untouched so the pocket could still hold small mementos — a thoughtful feature that preserves some of the original sweatshirt’s utility.
The result is a cozy, personal pillow made from an item that already holds memories. It’s a simple sewing project that turns something worn into a new, meaningful keepsake. Whether you use sleeves as stuffing or add fiberfill, the key is to preserve the character of the original garment while reinforcing seams so the pillow lasts.
It was a privilege to make this pillow for a very special girl, and I hope my daughter’s friend treasures it as much as I enjoyed creating it. Functional, sentimental, and sustainable — repurposing clothing into pillows is an accessible craft that preserves memories and reduces waste.
