A hands-on review of Hotpoint’s ActiveCare 10kg NM11 1045 WC A washing machine.

We wash a lot more laundry than the average couple with a dog. Between muddy walks, DIY projects and camping trips in our camper van, washing is a near-daily chore. I even created a dedicated utility kitchen area to cope with the volume and will share a step-by-step installation guide soon for anyone who wants to fit their own machine.
For this review, our recent two-week Christmas trip across France and Spain provided the perfect real-world test. We returned with a substantial pile of sleeping bags, coats, blankets, hiking kit and delicate items that needed careful cleaning.
The loads included memory foam pillows with stubborn discoloration, a double sleeping bag, heavy wool blankets and an assortment of everyday garments—and the ActiveCare handled them all well.
LOAD SIZE
The first thing that stood out about the Hotpoint ActiveCare 10kg NM11 1045 WC A was its capacity. Although the width and height are similar to our old machine (W59.5cm x H85cm), the drum holds up to 10kg—large enough to cut down on the number of washes we normally do. Do note the unit is slightly deeper at 60.5cm, so check for any pipes or obstacles behind the washing area before installing.
BUT FIRSTLY, WHAT IS ACTIVE CARE?
ActiveCare is Hotpoint’s fabric-care technology designed to be gentle on garments while removing a wide range of stains even at low temperatures. The system claims to tackle more than 100 common stains at 20°C—things like pizza, ink, coffee and mud. In our tests, memory foam pillows with grey and yellow marks emerged visibly cleaner after an ActiveCare cycle, succeeding where our previous machine had failed.
NO MEASURING REQUIRED
The detergent tray is a simple but welcome improvement. The dispenser is clearly marked with millilitre measurements, making dosing straightforward—especially helpful if you normally estimate detergent by eye. There’s a separate compartment for fabric conditioner and a pre-rinse section I use for quick rinse-and-spin cycles.
NO MORE GUESSWORK
The clear remaining-time display is one of my favourite features. It shows exactly how much time is left on a cycle, so we can plan tasks around the wash. Overall, this is the most informative washing machine we’ve owned—helpful when juggling multiple loads and a busy schedule.
ENERGY EFFICIENT
Despite its advanced features, the ActiveCare model carries an A+++ energy rating. Noise levels are impressively low for most of the cycle—about 98% of the time it’s whisper-quiet. The spin phase is louder for roughly two minutes, but even that is a big improvement over older machines we’ve used.

WASHING TIPS TO MAKE LIFE EASIER
I’m particular about garment care—years managing a clothing shop taught me how to make items last through careful washing. Here are practical tips that fit well with using a modern, high-capacity machine:
- Keep separate laundry baskets for colours and whites to avoid frequent sorting.
- Use laundry bags for delicates to prevent snags and stretching.
- Avoid overloading the drum; it reduces cleaning effectiveness and stresses fabrics.
- Liquid detergent dissolves better in cold washes—ideal when using 20°C cycles.
- Always check garment care labels—some wools and delicates need specific programs.
THE VERDICT
After extensive use, the Hotpoint ActiveCare 10kg NM11 1045 WC A has proven to be a reliable and flexible machine. The larger drum genuinely reduces the number of loads, and the precise detergent dispenser has made our laundry feel softer and fresher—fabric conditioner now actually smells noticeable. The ActiveCare stain-removal program delivered on tough marks that our old washer couldn’t handle, and the capacity easily accommodated a halved double sleeping bag or duvet without struggling.
Overall, we’re impressed with its performance, energy efficiency and thoughtful features. It looks good, feels solid, and simplifies laundry for active households—so we would recommend it.
