I admit it—I’m hopelessly devoted to repurposing. I can’t bring myself to throw things away. I save paper rolls and turn them into hearts, I keep old clothing to recover chairs, and lately I’ve accumulated a small army of tin cans. If I don’t start repurposing them, I’ll be overrun. This project shows how a single large coffee tin became a handsome vase with simple materials and a few household finds.
Materials and Finish
I began by painting the large tin with DecoArt Chalky Finish paint in the color Enchanted, a warm olive tone. I left the paint matte because I liked the slightly rugged, weathered look it gives the metal. For subtle highlights, I added a brass accent using DecoArt Metallic Lustre along the top and bottom edges. The Metallic Lustre dries quickly and gives a soft metallic sheen that keeps the overall finish restrained and rustic.
Creating Internal Support
This particular tin originally held coffee, so it was fairly large—about 6 inches (15 cm) across. I wanted to use it as a vase for some branches, but I needed a way to keep the stems upright without them flopping over. My simple solution was to nest four smaller tin cans inside the larger one, evenly spaced, which creates four small compartments and gives the branches structure and balance.
Decorative Touches
To soften the metal and add texture I wrapped the outside with a burlap ribbon. Burlap is inexpensive, durable, and lends a cozy, natural feel that complements the chalk paint finish. I also scrounged around the house for fabric flowers and other trim—this is one of the joys of repurposing: you never know what treasures you’ll find when you look through your stashes.
Bringing in Natural Elements
I recently cut a few pomegranate branches at the farm and brought them home. Their twisting form and bright buds look beautiful against the olive paint and brass highlights. The inner smaller cans keep each cluster of stems upright and create a pleasing, balanced arrangement without the need for floral foam or additional fillers.
Why This Works
This is a quick and inexpensive project with a big visual payoff. The key elements are paint for unified color and texture, small nested cans for internal structure, and a few decorative details—burlap, fabric flowers, or natural stems—to personalize the piece. Paint transforms ordinary metal into something warm and intentional; the Brass Metallic Lustre adds dimension without overpowering the matte Chalky Finish.
More Tips and Ideas
– For smaller cans, consider using different heights to create visual interest and to support a mix of stems and flowers.
– If you plan to use live flowers, line the inner cans with small jars or plastic liners to hold water and protect the metal.
– Try other finishes—chalk paint in pastel shades for a softer look, or hammered metal spray for an industrial effect.
– Burlap, twine, lace, or strips of old fabric all work well as inexpensive trims to match your home decor.
Final Thoughts
I’m always talking about the power of paint—this project proves it. With minimal effort and everyday materials, a plain tin becomes a decorative vase that elevates simple cuttings from the garden. I reclaimed a few less tins from clutter and replaced them with a pretty, purposeful piece. Do you save cans to repurpose them, or do you prefer to recycle? Either way, here’s a friendly reminder that a little creativity can turn trash into treasure.
