Red Waterproof Stool for Outdoor and Bathroom Use

Red Waterproof Stool: A Simple DIY Makeover

In the spirit of renewal, I finally decided to rescue a neglected stool that had been sitting in the corner for years—rusty, sad, and overlooked. After much procrastination, this little project breathed new life into a piece that now looks fresh and ready for everyday use. This is the story of the red waterproof stool.

The stool’s legs were heavily rusted and in rough shape. To refresh them I chose a metallic paint blended with a beige craft paint, producing a subtle pearlescent finish instead of a harsh metallic look. The nuance of the mix created a soft shimmer that complements the bathroom setting without overpowering it.

The seat itself was torn in several places. I rummaged through my fabric-scraps box and found a piece of waterproof material salvaged from an old umbrella. This proved to be an ideal choice because the stool spends a lot of time in the bathroom, where moisture is a constant concern. Using umbrella fabric meant the seat would be far more resistant to damp conditions and less likely to develop mold or stains.

This waterproof fabric was perfect: lightweight, durable, and colorful enough to restore the stool’s personality. Repurposing materials like an umbrella canopy is a smart, sustainable approach—you save money and keep usable material out of the landfill. The fabric’s finish also wipes clean easily, which is a real advantage in a bathroom environment.

And now for the reveal—the finished stool.

Take a moment to admire the legs—the pearly effect shows well in photos and in person. The finish softens the metal look while still hiding the imperfections that came from years of use. That little sheen makes the stool feel updated and intentional, rather than patched up.

Now the stool is proud to sit in the bathroom and no longer needs to worry about getting moldy or damp. As an added bonus, the new color scheme coordinates nicely with the tiles, so it blends in while still bringing a cheerful pop to the space.

If this makeover inspires you, feel free to share it with friends or save the images for your own DIY ideas. Repurposing materials and giving a small item fresh attention can make a big difference in how a room feels.
