How to Repurpose Your Decor for a Unique Christmas Look
Last week I showed how I upcycled my Christmas tree ornaments. As someone who loves frugal creativity, I also enjoy repurposing what I already own to create a fresh holiday look. In this post I’ll walk you through how I transformed my living room by reusing existing decor to produce a unique, cozy Christmas display.
The Wall Unit: A Large, Versatile Canvas
The main feature in my living room is a large wall unit that fills one end of the room. It’s tall and spacious, giving me plenty of surfaces to style. One of the smartest things I did was flip my books so the spines face inward, creating a neutral backdrop that makes decorating simple and versatile. That neutral base lets me arrange seasonal accents without clashing with colorful book covers.
Ceiling Globes and Painted Ornaments
At the top of the room I use a ceiling spotlight fixture as a hanging point for ornaments. Last year I had red globe ornaments, but this season I wanted to minimize red, so I transformed those same globes by painting them green with acrylic craft paint. A bottle of simple craft paint goes a long way and is an economical way to update existing decorations for a cohesive color scheme.
Fabric Scrap Garland: An Easy DIY Accent
I was inspired by a garland made from fabric scraps and dug into my own stash to make a similar piece. A fabric-scrap garland is fast to assemble, adds texture and color, and is a great way to use leftover materials. I layered last year’s homemade ornaments into the garland to add variety and sentimentality. Using scraps saves money and gives your decor a handmade, personal touch.
Framed Cards and Reworked Artwork
One of my daughter’s small canvases featured a moon painting that didn’t feel particularly Christmasy, so I flipped the canvas, painted the edges a festive green, and mounted a Christmas card inside with double-sided tape. Framing holiday cards or placing them in turned frames is an effortless way to add seasonal charm without buying new artwork.
Small Vignettes and Repurposed Finds
Below the framed piece I created a small vignette using an old spice rack—more about that in a future post. Little groupings like this draw the eye and make the shelving feel intentional. I also repurposed a broken snow globe by placing a jar on top, turning a busted item into a cute display piece. It’s reminders like these that repurposing is often more about creativity than cost.
Turned Objects into Holiday “Buildings”
On the middle shelves I display two tall white pieces we jokingly call our “Empire State Buildings.” They began life as discarded furniture legs that my husband found. I painted them with two coats of chalk-style paint and left them simple, which creates a striking, architectural accent. A small painted wooden house and a handmade miniature tree—constructed from a thread spool wrapped in green velvet—complete the festive village scene.
Sentimental Touches and Simple Hacks
I arranged framed photos of my kids, added a basket with its handle wrapped in a beloved string of tri-colored beads, and placed a green centerpiece atop my decoupaged trunk. Small, sentimental items make seasonal decor feel warm and personal. I also used a piece of green velvet fabric behind a centerpiece to disguise imperfect book spines—an easy styling trick to maintain a polished look. The trunk itself was transformed by decoupaging book pages, proving that a little effort can dramatically improve a thrifted or worn piece.
Final Touches: Garlands and Angels
To finish the look I hung a strand of gold bead garland and displayed wooden angels. A repurposed antique cauldron serves as a rustic base, and I made a red tree topper by rolling decorative paper into a cone—simple, inexpensive, and effective. These final accents help pull the entire vignette together and add sparkle where the eye wanders.
Wrapping Up
Repurposing existing decor to create a unique Christmas display is an affordable, creative way to refresh your home each holiday season. Whether you’re painting old ornaments, turning found objects into new focal pieces, or using fabric scraps and cards for inexpensive accents, small DIY projects can make a big visual impact. I hope this living room tour inspires you to look at the items you already own and imagine new ways to use them for festive, budget-friendly decorating.
