It’s been chilly for many of us lately, and even though I live in a coastal town near the water, I’ve been feeling the cold too. When I have a quiet moment, I love to curl up on the couch with blankets and pillows. The only problem was I had nowhere tidy to store them when they weren’t in use. An old wicker basket in my attic looked like the perfect candidate to hold all my cozy throws and pillows, but it needed a little makeover first.
I know it’s been cold for a lot of you. Even living by the sea doesn’t keep me warm all the time. When I find a moment to unwind, I want to sink into the couch with a blanket and some cushions. The problem was that I had nowhere convenient to keep my snugglies. This old basket seemed like the ideal home for them, but it needed a refresh.
Rummaging through my paint stash, I found an acrylic I liked—no sponsorship here, just happy serendipity. For this project I chose a craft acrylic suitable for wicker and mixed my own shades for a soft, lived-in look.
Looking through my paints I found a tube I liked—no, I’m not sponsored, just glad to have options! I picked a craft acrylic that adheres well to natural wicker and started experimenting with color mixes.
I began by painting the thicker reeds along the top and bottom of the basket in a crisp white. Painting those prominent bands first defines the shape and gives the basket a clean frame.
I started by painting the top and bottom thicker reeds white. These larger sections establish a neat border and make the basket look refreshed right away.
I applied some paint inside the rim as well to keep the finish consistent. Small interior touches make the basket look finished and help protect the reeds from wear.
I painted a little on the inside rim too, which helps the piece look finished and keeps the inside tidy where the blankets sit.
Next, I mixed black into the white to create a soft gray. That shade varied a little depending on the mix and the brushwork, which I liked—it gives the basket more character. I painted the handles and the two reeds that run down the front in that gray to create contrast.
I mixed a touch of black into the white to get a soft gray. Because the color shifted slightly in places, the finish gained a pleasant, handcrafted quality. I used that gray on the handles and the two vertical reeds across the front.
To add interest, I stamped imperfect circles across the basket. I used jar lids of different sizes to trace the shapes loosely—no need for them to be perfect. The imperfect circles create a playful focal point without overpowering the natural wicker texture.
Then I added circles to bring a little extra personality. I used various jar caps to outline rough circles, embracing imperfection to keep the look casual and charming.
Once the paint dried, I distressed parts of the finish with a damp towel to reveal some of the original wicker beneath. Distressing softens the look and makes the basket feel like a familiar, well-used home accessory. Be careful with this technique—you can always remove more paint, but it’s hard to put it back once it’s gone.
I distressed the paint here and there with a damp cloth to expose bits of the natural wicker. This technique gives the basket a vintage, well-loved appearance. I may have taken off a bit more paint than planned, but I love the result—it feels like it’s been in the home forever.
And here it is: my freshly updated basket to store all my snugglies. It looks neat next to the sofa and keeps blankets and pillows within easy reach when the chill sets in.
Here’s the finished basket, ready to hold all my blankets and pillows. It sits perfectly beside the sofa, keeping cozy essentials handy for chilly afternoons or windy seaside evenings.
The basket also holds a pillow I made from an old sweater—an easy, on-trend upcycle. If you’d like a tutorial on turning a sweater into a pillow, I’ve made several and can share a step-by-step guide. They’re simple to sew and make perfect cozy accents for any living room.
It even holds a sweater-made pillow I created—this kind of upcycling is very popular now. If you want a tutorial on how to make one, tell me and I’ll share the steps. I’ve made a few, and soon the house might be full of them!
