How to Create a Calm Bedroom: Serene Decor Ideas

The Bedroom Reveal: A Calm, Relaxing Space Using Vintage, Thrifted and IKEA Finds

The day has finally arrived—I’m ready to share the finished bedroom reveal I started almost six months ago. This makeover was more about thoughtful choices than dramatic renovations. I considered color, function and how to reuse what I already owned. Along the way I spent plenty of time with my little dog, who made the project even more enjoyable.

The Sleep / Rest Area

When I first shared my plans for the room, there was a lot of debate about bed placement. Originally the bed was pushed against the wall, but after hearing feedback I moved it away from the wall and rotated it to a different orientation. I worried it might make the room feel smaller, but the opposite happened—the room feels more open and balanced.

I updated the bed skirt to run all the way around the mattress for a cleaner look. To add visual balance above the bed I hung a decorative kitchen towel (mounted on wood and tied with twine) as inexpensive, textured wall art—simple and effective. There’s no visible headboard; the layered pillows provide enough pattern and interest without cluttering the space.

Between the bed and the wall I placed a slim bench I had previously upcycled. It fits perfectly where a nightstand would normally go and doubles as a surface for books and a lamp. The lamp doesn’t fully match the rest of the room yet, but it works for now—I’ll keep an eye out for a better option at garage sales.

On the opposite side of the bed I placed a chair that had been refreshed in a dual makeover. It’s perfect for tossing clothes when you’re not in the mood to hang them up—keeping it real. Under the chair sits a garage-sale basket storing medical items; I may relocate those later to keep the visual flow cleaner. The curtains are made from drop cloth, sewn into simple pleats—an inexpensive way to add texture and soft light filtering.

The Storage Area

On the other side of the room I removed two slim black bookcases to open the space and moved them to the living room for future upcycles. That change alone made a notable difference in how airy the room feels.

In the corner now sits a vintage white dresser that holds my essentials. I considered stenciling it but decided simplicity would serve this small room better—new glass knobs add a subtle sparkle without overpowering the space. Above the dresser I grouped two mirrors: one rescued and transformed from a plastic thrift find and another painted to have a gently chippy, farmhouse look. Together they read as intentional and timeless.

A small wall cubby and an IKEA picture ledge combine to give useful storage and display without clutter. The cubby arrived dark brown and had stubborn enamel paint; several coats later it blends nicely with the ledge and the rest of the palette.

The Work Area

The mid-century modern storage pieces house paperwork and the printer. I moved them closer to my desk for convenience, and a light coat of coordinated paint helped unify them with the rest of the room. Using soft, muted colors expands the perceived space and keeps the overall feeling calm.

My craft supplies live in a compact utility cart that’s ideal for easy access and mobile storage. It holds a surprising amount of material and tucks neatly beside the desk.

The workstation required only light updates: I cleared the clutter, painted the table legs white to blend with the room, and kept a neutral gray chair as an anchor piece. Organized post-its and a tidy cork board help me stay focused without visual chaos.

A Calm and Relaxing Bedroom

Many readers suggested separating the sleep area from the work area, and that separation made all the difference. With everything assigned a place, the room functions smoothly for rest and productivity. I considered adding copper accents but settled on a soft slate blue to lend a soothing, cohesive tone. The color palette is intentionally muted to create a peaceful atmosphere that still feels interesting thanks to textures and vintage pieces.

Now that the room is organized, I’m more likely to make the bed each morning before my dog jumps on it. The space has become both a stress-free zone for relaxation and a pleasant, efficient workspace with the printer and paperwork nearby. Combining IKEA finds with thrifted and vintage pieces created a balanced look that’s functional, calm and comfortable.

I’m delighted with how this project turned out and grateful for the suggestions that guided many of my choices. If you have ideas for final tweaks—I’m especially thinking about lamp swaps—I’d love your feedback.
