How to Apply Decorative Wax to Transform Wood Finishes

Finishing a Small Wood Treasure Box: A Long-Delayed Project

Have you ever planned a simple project that somehow ends up at the back of a drawer for months or even years? That was my fate with a small wooden box—what some call a treasure box. I worked on it in fits and starts for more than three years. It sounds embarrassing when I admit it, but the good news is I finally finished it and want to share the result.

Instead of posting the full story here, I’m taking readers over to my friend Deborah’s blog at Salvage Sister and Mister, where we teamed up to show how a little decorative wax can transform a plain wooden box into something special. Deborah and her husband Tom create inspiring upcycling and repurposing projects, and they graciously hosted my finished treasure box as part of a farmhouse-style decorative wax tutorial.

How the Project Evolved

What began as an ordinary little box gradually became a lesson in patience and design. I experimented with paint layers, distressing, and finally decorative wax to highlight details and bring out depth in the wood. The process taught me that small projects can be deceptively complex—and often rewarding when you persevere.

Decorative wax is deceptively simple to apply, but it can change the entire character of a piece. On this box I used a farmhouse white wax over a warm red basecoat to create contrast and a softly aged look. The wax settled into crevices and edges to emphasize texture and craftsmanship.

The Community that Inspires Me

I got to know Deborah through the Upcycle Sharin group, a vibrant Facebook community where people share repurposing ideas and completed projects. The group is run by a team of bloggers and makers who post tutorials, before-and-after photos, and helpful tips. If you enjoy upcycling, this kind of creative community is a great place to find inspiration and encouragement.

Why Small Projects Matter

Sometimes the smallest projects have the biggest visual impact. Whether you make your own treasure box or buy a similar one, taking the time to add finishing touches—like decorative wax, layers of paint, or subtle distressing—can transform a simple object into a meaningful keepsake or gift.

If you like before-and-after projects and techniques for making wood look aged and special, my post on Deborah’s blog walks through the steps I used on this box, from basecoat to wax application. You can judge whether the final result was worth the years it took me to finish it.
