Hide Your Washing Machine: Space-Saving Concealment Ideas

How I Hid My Washing Machine: A Simple DIY Fabric-Covered Partition

This medium-sized spare room doubles as a laundry and family room. Because the washing machine is permanently plumbed in and can’t be moved without major work, I chose a creative solution: disguise it. The goal was to make the appliance blend into the room while keeping it easy to access. The result is a folding fabric-covered partition and a matching cover that tucks the washer out of sight, yet is simple to remove when I need to do laundry.

What’s Behind the Partition

Behind the partition sits the washing machine, neatly concealed from view. From a distance the space looks more like a decorative nook than a laundry area, which makes the whole room feel calmer and more cohesive.

Materials and Construction

With my husband’s help, we built a simple folding wall using three rectangular laminate boards. Each board was wrapped in batting for a soft, finished surface and then covered with fabric. I used two complementary fabrics: a patterned fabric on the front panels and a coordinating fabric on the back that also became the washing machine cover. The three boards were joined together with hinges so the partition folds flat for storage or limited space.

Before and After

Before making the partition, the washer was visible and dominated this corner of the room. After installing the fabric panels and covering the machine with matching fabric, the space instantly felt warmer and more organized. The coordinated fabrics tie the whole area together and make the laundry setup look intentional rather than utilitarian.

Covering the Washing Machine

I used the same fabric that lined the back of the partition to make a snug cover for the washing machine. That consistency helps the whole installation read as a cohesive piece instead of separate, mismatched elements. The cover is lightweight and removable, so when it’s time to wash clothes I simply lift it off and fold the panels back out of the way.

Added Details

To make the area even more functional, I covered a small stool in the same fabric. I use it as a temporary stand for the laundry basket while I sort or fold clothes. Small touches like this reinforce the decorative theme and add practical utility.

Why This Works

  • It’s inexpensive: laminate boards, batting and fabric are affordable materials.
  • It’s reversible: the partition and covers can be removed without altering the room permanently.
  • It’s attractive: fabric choices allow you to coordinate with existing decor.
  • It’s practical: the washer remains fully accessible when needed.

Overall, this is a quick and effective way to hide the washing machine in plain sight without major renovations. The fabric panels give you design flexibility—change the fabric later if you redecorate, or fold the panels away when you need more room.

Tips and Variations

Choose fabrics that are durable and easy to clean—cotton blends work well. If you want more structure, add lightweight foam board under the fabric for stiffness. For a sleeker look, use plain fabric and add decorative trim, or attach hooks to keep the panels anchored. Adjustable hinges will let you control how far the partition opens.

If you’d like to try a similar project, gather your materials, measure the opening carefully, and cut the boards to size. Wrap each board in batting, glue or staple the fabric evenly, and secure the panels together with hinges. Make the washer cover large enough to lift off easily and ensure any vents or controls remain accessible.

Final Thoughts

This small DIY project turned the washing machine from an eyesore into a tidy, integrated part of the room. When I need the machine, the cover comes off in seconds and the panels fold away. If you enjoy simple home upgrades that blend function with style, this is a great option to consider.
