This repurposed patio chair idea is both practical and budget-friendly. Read how a torn rattan chair was given new life as a charming, welcoming vignette for the front of the house.

New Purpose for a Broken Rattan Chair

We have a tiny landing by our front door—more of a pause point than a porch—and it was feeling a bit bare. When I found an old rattan chair with a torn seat, I saw an opportunity to turn something destined for the curb into outdoor decor that adds curb appeal without breaking the bank.

I started by bringing the chair to the landing and arranging a pair of rubber boots I had saved—boots make unexpectedly cute planters. I filled them with faux flowers for a quick pop of color, but the original dark frame of the chair clashed with the softer, brighter elements and left the whole vignette looking unfinished.

After a bit of trial and error I decided to freshen the chair’s look. A light dry brush of white acrylic paint softened the frame and helped integrate the boots and flowers into a cohesive display. I finished by wrapping a faux vine around the frame to add texture and a touch of greenery that ties everything together visually.

My little helper—our new puppy—kept me company while I worked. Small projects like this are a good excuse to reuse items around the house and create something practical and pretty for your entryway.

What I Used:

Note: A few of the items I used were found around the house. This project is ideal for upcycling and using things you already own.

  • a rattan chair with a torn seat
  • white acrylic paint
  • a paint brush
  • a pair of rubber boots
  • an old wicker wine bottle holder
  • faux flowers and a faux vine
  • an old round basket

How to Repurpose Patio Furniture

I used the rule of threes to create a balanced composition. After painting the chair frame white and wrapping the faux vine, I painted the wicker bottle holder in the same casual white finish to maintain a unified color story. The white tones brighten the small landing and allow the pinks and greens of the faux flowers to stand out.

To add more visual interest at the base of the chair, I found an old basket in the basement and painted the horizontal strips white for a coordinated accent. Filling that basket with more faux flowers completed the layered look and filled the empty space at the foot of the chair.

The result is a cheerful grouping of pinks, whites, and natural tones that reads fresh and intentional. Even on a rainy day, the vignette brightens the entry and makes the small landing feel inviting.

If you want to adapt this idea, consider swapping faux flowers for real plants if your space receives enough light, or use seasonal accents—pumpkins in fall, evergreen branches in winter—to keep the display current. The chair itself becomes a versatile base for rotating decor, which extends its usefulness despite the torn seat.

What would you add at the foot of the chair? Small pots, a doormat, or a lantern can all make a useful and attractive addition. The key is balancing scale, color, and texture so the arrangement feels intentional.

After a short lull in the rain I ran outside and snapped photos of the finished vignette. Even with wet pavement, the scene reads fresh and welcoming—proof that small, low-cost updates can make a tangible difference to your entryway.

Repurposing this torn rattan chair not only saved it from the trash but created a charming focal point for our front door. Using items from around the house—boots, a basket, a wicker holder—keeps the cost down and encourages creative reuse.
