Birds of Christmas: Easy Framed Wall Decor to Brighten a Bare Corner
Last year I visited my sons in New York. Before I left, I decorated their Christmas tree and refreshed the room a bit — after all, nobody decorates like Mom. I placed the tree in a corner, but the wall behind it looked too bare. I wanted a simple, cheerful solution that would complement the tree without costing a lot or taking too much time.
Finding the Perfect Frame
The next day I went to an estate sale. There were many beautiful items on display, most of them out of my price range, but I spotted a lonely old frame. The frame had character and a worn, vintage look that I liked. It was empty, which made it perfect for a simple DIY project.
Materials and Simple Steps
I took the frame home and cut a piece of sturdy cardboard to fit the opening. I glued a piece of linen over the cardboard to create a soft, textured background. At home I had a few pretty holiday cards featuring birds in winter scenes — to me they looked like a charming “Birds of Christmas” collection. The colors and seasonal imagery were perfect, so I trimmed the cards and glued them onto the linen backing inside the frame.
Why This Works for Holiday Wall Decor
This framed arrangement solved the empty-wall problem instantly. It’s a budget-friendly and quick way to create seasonal wall decor using recycled or thrifted materials. The linen provides a neutral backdrop that enhances the colors of the bird illustrations, while the distressed frame adds vintage charm and pairs nicely with the tree’s classic look.
Unique Details and a Little Holiday Whimsy
Each bird card is unique and set in a winter scene, which is why I call the finished piece “Birds of Christmas.” The individual cards feel like small artworks grouped together, creating a focal point on the otherwise empty wall. The frame’s distressed patina was already there when I bought it, and that aged detail gives the project an authentic, cozy feel.
Finishing Touches
I hung the frame next to the tree, and to complete the holiday scene I placed the little choo-choo train so it could circle the base of the tree. The framed birds brought color and personality to the corner, and the overall arrangement looked much more finished. I like to imagine the birds flew out of their cards to tidy the tree — my own little version of Christmas elves.
Observations and Ideas
If you’re trying this at home, you can vary the size and number of cards to fit different frames. Use double-sided tape or a lightweight adhesive to attach paper elements to fabric-covered backing, and consider matting or spacing the cards for a more gallery-like presentation. Thrifted frames, holiday cards, and simple craft supplies are an easy way to create a personalized seasonal display.
Did the Elves Help?
After hanging the frame and arranging the tree, the space looked noticeably better. Maybe my “Birds of Christmas” did a bit of magical tidying — the tree and corner felt more balanced and festive.
