A few weeks ago I made an organizer for my daughter’s desk. You may remember the original version I shared earlier.
That pink container, however, kept bothering me. Sometimes you get fixated on the smallest detail, and you won’t rest until it’s corrected. In my case, the pink just didn’t fit with the look I wanted — so it had to go.
I decided to replace it with a set of shorter tin cans I had on hand. Upcycling tin cans into storage containers is a simple, eco-friendly DIY that works great for pencil and marker organization. These cans were the perfect height and gave me a clean base to style.
I covered each can with matching contact paper to give them a coordinated, modern look. Contact paper is an inexpensive and versatile material for DIY organizers — it adheres easily, comes in many patterns, and makes the finished pieces look custom-made.
The result was exactly what I wanted. The black-and-white pattern of the contact paper complements the colorful markers and pencils, letting the supplies be the visual focus while the containers provide a clean, graphic backdrop.
Upcycling tips: press the contact paper firmly to avoid bubbles, trim edges neatly with a craft knife, and consider lining the inside with a thin layer of foam or felt if you plan to store delicate items. These small details make DIY organizers feel polished and professional.
Before and after: the difference is subtle but satisfying. Swapping a single mismatched piece for a coordinated set can completely change the mood of a workspace. A tidy desk with thoughtful storage makes it easier for kids to find supplies and for adults to focus on projects.
I can sleep easily now that the pink container has been banished. It’s funny how these little tweaks bring such joy. Small updates like this are quick wins for improving function and aesthetics in a child’s room or any home office.
