3 Creative Holiday Gift Wrapping Ideas

It’s my favorite time of the month: another edition of the International Bloggers Club. We’re a group of friends from around the world who gather monthly to share projects, compare notes, and see how we celebrate and create in our own corners of the globe. Last month we shared wood projects, and the month before we shared flatlay photos of favorite things.

With the holidays right around the corner, I’m sharing three simple, neutral gift-wrapping ideas that are easy to recreate and flexible enough to use year-round.

Last year I showed how to wrap gifts using vintage fabric, which felt wonderfully eco-friendly. This year I’ve recently moved and don’t have a stash of fabric scraps, so I returned to paper—yet I still wanted simple, sustainable, and stylish results.

#1 The Musical Wrap

Choose paper printed with musical notes or another subtle pattern on a cream or white background. The neutral base makes it easy to change the look with different accents—dress it up or keep it casual.
I wrapped the box, tied it with natural twine, and added a small chalkboard-painted tag secured with mini clothespins. The result is relaxed and rustic—perfect for a casual, homey presentation. Swap the twine for metallic ribbon and you have a more glamorous holiday look. This approach works beautifully for music lovers or anyone who appreciates a vintage-inspired aesthetic.

#2 The Brown Paper Wrap

Brown kraft paper or stock paper is an excellent neutral base. It’s affordable, easy to store, and adapts to many different styles depending on the embellishments you choose.
For a simple, rustic finish, I used a hand-painted wooden star ornament and tied the package with red-and-white baker’s twine. The wooden star can double as a small keepsake ornament for the recipient. Write the name directly on the kraft paper with a black permanent marker or attach a small tag. If you prefer a more refined look, add satin ribbons or a cluster of seasonal greenery.

#3 The White or Reverse-Side Wrap

Use the reverse side of patterned paper—or choose plain white or cream paper—to create a bright, versatile canvas. This option gives you the freedom to add any accent color or texture you like.
I tied this package with darker jute twine and added stockings cut from corrugated cardboard—the inner wavy texture of cardboard creates a lovely, tactile detail. Cardboard scraps from delivered boxes are perfect for DIY tags or ornaments: simply cut a shape, punch a hole, and thread with twine. Because the paper is plain, you can quickly adapt the look for birthdays, weddings, or holidays by switching colors and accessories.
Three simple, neutral approaches—musical, kraft, and plain white—give you a versatile trio of wrapping styles. Use one set of papers and change the accents to create dozens of looks without buying a different roll for every occasion. These ideas save time, reduce waste, and let you keep your gift presentation cohesive and stylish all year long.
While photographing these packages my daughter peeked and asked if there was anything inside. I smiled and told her yes—yet without names on the tags, the surprise is safe for now!
I hope these three straightforward, neutral gift-wrapping ideas inspire you to simplify your holiday prep. With just a few basic supplies—patterned or plain paper, twine or ribbon, and small DIY tags—you can create attractive, personal gift presentations that suit any season.
