Today I’m sharing an easy and affordable way to upcycle a plastic picture frame into stylish holiday wall decor. With just a few paints, a printable, and a small embellishment, a plain frame becomes a rustic, gift-worthy piece that’s perfect for seasonal decorating.
What I Used:
- A budget-friendly plastic picture frame (mine included a three-panel divider)
- Americana Chalky Finish paint in Everlasting (used as a primer)
- DecoArt Americana acrylic paints in red and yellow
- DecoArt Dazzling Metallics in Black Pearl
- PicMonkey (or similar design tool) to create the printable
- A small mini Christmas wreath or other seasonal embellishment
Note: I received product for this project, but all opinions are my own and I only recommend materials I genuinely like.
How to Transform a Plastic Frame into Rustic Holiday Wall Decor
Step 1 — Prime the frame: Start by painting two coats of chalky finish paint over the front of the plastic frame. Chalky paint acts like a primer on slick plastic surfaces and hides the original black finish. It also creates a toothier surface so subsequent paint layers adhere better.
Step 2 — Mix a warm wood tone: For a rustic, wood-like appearance, mix a little red and yellow acrylic paint with a touch of the Black Pearl metallic paint. The metallic adds depth and subtle sheen that makes the finish look more like stained wood than painted plastic. Apply two coats with long brushstrokes; these paints dry quickly and this step is fast and forgiving.
Step 3 — Create the printable: Design a simple “JOY” printable using your favorite graphic tool. I used PicMonkey and selected a bold, slightly whimsical font so the letters would read well at a larger size. Because my frame was wider than a standard sheet of paper, I printed the design twice and trimmed the sheets so the letters lined up inside the frame’s divided openings.
Step 4 — Arrange the letters: Position the cut prints behind the frame so each section displays a letter. The frame’s center divider provided a natural spot for the “O,” while the outer panels hold the “J” and “Y.” This layout makes the word work across the divided openings and plays into the frame’s original design.
Step 5 — Add an embellishment: Finish the piece by attaching a small Christmas wreath or another seasonal accent over the center section. A simple wreath, a sprig of greenery, or a cluster of berries creates visual interest and helps the whole project read as intentional holiday decor.
This project aims for an understated, traditional look that can also read as farmhouse style depending on the embellishment you choose. The metallic accent paint gives the frame a subtle sheen and texture, transforming glossy plastic into a piece that looks like weathered wood. A few intentional imperfections only add charm.
This makes a thoughtful and inexpensive gift—mine now hangs on a friend’s wall. It’s a quick project that uses common craft supplies and a printable you can personalize for any season.
The key takeaway: give old or inexpensive frames a second life. With chalky paint for adhesion, a mixed acrylic to create a wood-like tone, and a printable for personalization, you can create seasonal wall decor with minimal time and cost. The addition of metallic paint is a small step that makes a big visual difference.
