Chalkboard Fall Vignette: DIY Rustic Autumn Decor

Autumn has arrived in full force. The days are getting cooler, and I still hadn’t started my seasonal decorating. I wanted a quick, cheerful project to bring a little Fall spirit into the house. The first thing that caught my eye was a simple bottle with an orange plastic top that looked pumpkin-like—so why not turn it into a little pumpkin-inspired vignette?

I painted the bottle labels with black chalkboard paint. After the paint fully dried, I seasoned the surface by rubbing chalk all over and wiping it clean. This makes the chalkboard surface less shiny and easier to write on. Then came the fun part—drawing and playing with different designs.

I found another bottle and treated it the same way—paint the label, let it dry, season with chalk, and draw. Having multiple bottles lets you create a little cluster or vignette that feels intentional and festive without spending much money.

For texture, I decorated one bottle by gluing on coriander seeds to form a speckled, organic surface. This simple technique adds visual interest and gives a natural, rustic look that complements Fall décor. Use a clear craft glue and press the seeds on in small clusters; let the glue dry completely before handling.

These chalkboard-painted bottles are versatile. For a Halloween twist, turn the bottles so their painted faces look backward or draw spookier expressions and write phrases like “Boo” or “Trick or Treat.” You can swap the designs seasonally—erase the chalk and write holiday greetings, winter motifs, or simple labels.

Tips for success:

  • Use a flat, even coat of chalkboard paint on the label area for a smooth writing surface.
  • Season the paint with a piece of chalk rubbed over the surface, then wipe clean to prevent ghosting.
  • For glued-on seeds or other embellishments, choose a strong craft glue and allow ample drying time.
  • Add accents like twine, dried stems, or a sprig of faux foliage to give each bottle more character.

I like that these bottles offer two looks for the price of one: a Fall vignette now and a different theme next month. Because the labels are chalkboard, you can erase and rewrite as often as you like—perfect for seasonal decorating that’s both frugal and reusable. These upcycled bottles are a budget-friendly way to add personality to a mantel, entry table, or shelf.
