What seaside home doesn’t benefit from a little beach wall art? Ours did—until I turned a pile of forgotten items into a charming coastal piece that now belongs in any beach house. This project is all about upcycling, simplicity, and creating a relaxed, whitewashed look using things you already have.

DIY Beach Wall Art from Upcycled Items
This idea began when my husband built a large irrigation barrier that looked like a picture frame. He later found it wouldn’t fit, and I briefly thought I might inherit the frame for a wall piece. When he fixed the door, that frame was gone—but I kept looking for alternatives and found a rough piece of plywood tucked in a corner. It wasn’t perfect, but it was the perfect start.

I whitewashed the plywood with diluted white paint to get that weathered, coastal feel. A light wash keeps the grain visible and gives an instant beachy background that works well with natural and nautical accents.

While cleaning out an old dresser I found small treasures: ineffective rubber doorstops, a string of fish-shaped worry beads, and a few decorative knobs. None of these items were being used, but together they formed the raw materials for a seaside vignette. I also asked my daughter to paint a simple watercolor lighthouse, which added a personal, handmade touch to the composition.

I also had an old wooden boat that used to be part of a sail-themed frame. It had a few chips and a broken interior so it wasn’t in use. I gathered some twigs and a scrap of white fabric to make a tiny sail, fastening them so the fabric billowed slightly like a real sail in the breeze.

To assemble the piece, I drilled two small holes in the painted plywood and attached the salvaged knobs as anchors. Once mounted, I painted the knobs white so they blended seamlessly with the whitewashed background. I attached the boat and the handmade sail, arranged the watercolor lighthouse, and positioned the fish-shaped worry beads above the curves of the doorstops, which I repurposed as stylized waves.

The final result is a cohesive coastal display made entirely from repurposed objects: a whitewashed board, a tiny sailboat, a watercolor lighthouse, fish beads, and doorstops converted into rolling waves. Each element tells a part of the story, and together they create an inviting seaside scene that suits any beach-themed room or entryway.

Repurposing small, overlooked items is an economical and creative way to design coastal decor. If you’re inspired, try these quick tips: keep the base simple with a whitewash or light stain, group small items in odd numbers for visual interest, and add a personal touch like a child’s painting or found sea glass. Upcycled beach wall art is perfect for anyone who loves eco-friendly DIY home decor, coastal vibes, or handmade gifts.

My husband got his irrigation door back, and I gained a cheerful piece of seaside art made from hidden treasures. Sometimes a plan falls through and leads to an even better result. Is this art or just repurposed junk? For me it’s both—a meaningful, creative display that fits our coastal home.

If you enjoyed this project, try gathering odds and ends from around your home to create your own coastal art. It’s an affordable, sustainable way to refresh your decor with personality and seaside charm.
