About a year ago my husband woke me at five in the morning and surprised me with a boat ride to watch the sunrise. That early-morning outing was pure magic. Recently we decided to take a more relaxed evening trip, leaving the marina around seven to watch the sun sink into the bay. The evening gave us warm breezes, changing light, and a few delightful surprises. Join us on this boat ride into the sunset as the sky and sea put on a show.
As we eased out of the marina, the lighthouse and the network of sailboat masts framed the view. The gentle rocking of the boat and the distant sound of water against the hull set a calm, expectant mood. The sky was still bright, but hints of evening were beginning to gather along the horizon.
By 7:30 p.m. the sun still hung high enough to cast long, warm reflections across the water. We drifted slowly and watched the light mellow, painting the bay in soft golds and pale blues. The air was pleasantly cool and a light breeze lifted the scent of salt and seaweed off the water.
Our tranquility was delightfully interrupted when a pair of dolphins appeared, weaving and surfacing near the bow. Their playful movements created shimmering arcs and sent ripples across the water. Watching them swim alongside the boat felt like a private encore to the evening’s performance.
As the sun sank lower, colors deepened. The horizon shifted from gold to orange, then to rich reds and purples. Light slid across the hills and coastal rocks, outlining the town and the distant mountain silhouettes in dramatic relief. Every moment brought a subtle change, a new palette across the sky and sea.
By about 8:30 p.m. the sun had dropped further, and the coastline glowed with the last of its warmth. The play of light on the rocky slopes and rooftops was particularly beautiful—each angle revealing vivid contrasts and soft shadows. The town looked calm, as if enjoying the same quiet reverence we felt out on the water.
I always love how the retreating sunlight highlights the town and the rugged mountains behind it. Those golden moments emphasize texture and depth—stone facades and rocky ridges catch the light and seem to glow from within. It’s a reminder of how landscape and light together create lasting memories.
Around 8:50 p.m. the sun had finally slipped below the horizon, but the sky continued its transformation. The afterglow stretched across the water in bands of orange, pink, and deep indigo. Small fishing boats returned to the bay, and the day’s activity settled into the gentle rhythm of evening.
And my final surprise of the night: while I was busy capturing photos, my husband picked up his fishing rod and reeled in a fresh catch right there in the fading light. It felt like the perfect ending — a small celebration of a simple, beautiful evening on the water.
We had an amazing time: a light breeze, spectacular changing light, and the company of dolphins and fishermen made for a memorable evening. I’ve photographed sunsets on the beach at different times of year and from the mountaintops, but being out in the bay adds a different perspective — the reflections, the wide sky, and the intimacy of being on the water always change the experience. I hope you enjoyed this boat ride into the sunset. What has been the most spectacular sunset you’ve ever seen?
