Materials

  • Empty toilet paper rolls (a good number to make a large wreath)
  • Red paint in one or two shades (acrylic or craft paint)
  • Strong, bendable wire to form the heart frame
  • Hot glue or craft glue (optional for securing pieces)
  • Small chalkboard label or other tag for personalization
  • Natural accents such as real ivy or faux greenery
  • Scissors or a craft knife for cutting the rolls
  • Pencil and ruler (optional, for measuring and marking cuts)

How to Make the Heart Wreath

  1. Collect and prepare the rolls. Flatten a stack of empty toilet paper tubes and cut each tube into three even rings. Cutting them into thirds creates uniform curved pieces that stack nicely around the frame.
  2. Paint the rings. Apply one or two coats of red paint, letting the pieces dry fully between coats. Using two shades of red adds depth and visual interest.
  3. Shape the frame. Bend a length of wire into a heart shape to serve as the wreath frame. Make sure it’s sturdy enough to hold the weight of the roll pieces; twist or wrap the wire ends together to secure the frame.
  4. Assemble the wreath. Slide the painted rings onto the wire heart, arranging them closely so the wire isn’t visible. You can alternate shades or overlap pieces slightly to create a fuller look. If desired, add a dab of hot glue where pieces meet to keep them from shifting.
  5. Add a label and greenery. Attach a small chalkboard label or similar tag to the top of the heart for personalization. Tuck in real ivy or faux leaves around one side or the base to introduce a natural accent and a contrasting color and texture.
  6. Hang and enjoy. Use a secure hook or nail to hang your heart on the wall or over a mantel. The wreath is lightweight and makes a bold focal point.

Once the painted rings are threaded onto the wire, the wreath starts to take shape. Arrange the rings so they sit flush against each other for a neat, sculptural appearance. The chalkboard label provides a sweet spot to write a short message, a name, or a date.

Finishing Touches and Display Ideas

For a more rustic look, use natural or muted paints and finish with aged or dried greenery. If you prefer a modern statement, paint the rings all one vibrant color and skip the foliage. The wreath shown here includes real ivy that has aged to a leather-like greenish-brown—this adds an organic contrast to the bright red tubes.

This particular heart is quite large—about one meter in height (roughly 3 feet). Its size makes it an ideal piece for filling a wall space and creating a bold visual impact. Because the wreath is made from lightweight materials, it’s easy to hang and move as needed.

Tips and Variations

  • Experiment with different sizes by using more or fewer toilet paper rings or by varying how many pieces you stack on the wire.
  • Mix paint finishes—matte and gloss together can create visual texture.
  • Use patterned paper, fabric, or washi tape to cover some rings for a mixed-media wreath.
  • Make smaller versions as package toppers, ornaments, or mini door hangers—perfect for gifting or decorating small spaces.

This easy, low-cost project shows how simple materials from around the house can be transformed into striking seasonal décor. If you enjoy upcycling crafts, try adapting the concept with different shapes—circles, stars, or initials—to suit other holidays or everyday displays. A friend of mine made a charming mini version of this wreath that’s perfect for small spaces or as a sweet handmade gift.
