My younger daughter’s friend recently celebrated her birthday, and my daughter wanted to make a truly special gift. I suggested she refurbish a simple wooden box we had and fill it with thoughtful, handmade surprises.
The friend is an aspiring writer, so the gift was intended to be personal and useful — something made with care and creativity.
She painted the exterior a beautiful blue — her friend’s favorite — using acrylic craft paint.
The interior was painted white and then gently distressed to give it a soft, aged appearance. On the top of the box she decoupaged a page from one of her friend’s favorite books — a nod to her love of writing — and repeated the same decoupage on the bottom interior panel for a cohesive look.
To make the interior extra special, she added a handful of surprises tailored to a writer’s needs. She painted a small glass jar in the same blue, tied it with a ribbon, and filled it with tiny slips of paper printed with short, inspirational quotes — perfect for a quick spark of motivation on a slow writing day. She also included a pretty memo pad for jotting down ideas and several handmade bookmarks, since reading is essential to any writer’s life.

A detail of the memo pad — chosen to be both beautiful and practical.

I’m delighted to say the gift was a big success. The recipient loved the personal touches — it felt more meaningful than anything bought in a store because it was handmade and given from the heart. My daughter has since created more personalized box gifts in different styles, experimenting with colors, textures, and themed contents for other friends.
