DIY Narrow Scarf Hanger: A Space-Saving Solution
I made this slim scarf hanger for my daughter because she had scarves everywhere. We didn’t have much wall space, so the challenge was to create a narrow, tidy solution that would keep scarves visible and within reach. The project used mostly leftover materials and a simple accordion hook, making it both inexpensive and fast to assemble.
What I started with was a scrap piece of wood I found in the basement. It was the perfect narrow board to mount on the wall without taking up much room.
Materials and Tools
For this simple DIY scarf organizer you need just a few basic items: a narrow piece of wood (scrap wood works great), an accordion-style hook rack (I bought one at the dollar store), paint, some string or twine for hanging, and a few small hooks for the bottom if you want to add additional hanging options.
Assembly and Finishing
I painted the accordion hooks white and painted the wood a clean black for contrast. The white areas on the top and bottom were finished with chalk paint to give a subtle, matte look that contrasts nicely with the black board. Chalk paint is forgiving and quick to work with, but you can use any paint you have on hand.
After painting, I attached the accordion hook to the front of the board and added a length of sturdy string to the top to hang the unit on a nail. I also installed a few small hooks along the bottom for lighter accessories like bracelets or sunglasses. This gives the piece extra functionality without increasing its footprint.
Why This Works for Scarf Storage
This narrow scarf hanger keeps scarves organized, easy to find, and off the floor. It’s especially useful in small entryways, closets with limited wall space, or behind doors. Using vertical space rather than horizontal shelving keeps your surfaces clear and makes it simple to display scarves so you can choose one at a glance.
The end result is tidy and practical: my daughter can hang all her scarves in one place and find them easily. The whole piece takes up very little space and was inexpensive to make, thanks to recycled materials and a low-cost hook rack.
Tips and Alternatives
- If you prefer a different look, try staining the wood instead of painting it. A light stain can highlight the grain and create a warmer feel.
- For heavier scarves, make sure the accordion hook is securely fastened and consider adding a screw or two through the board into a wall stud for extra support.
- Instead of string, mount the board directly to the wall with screws or picture hangers for a more permanent installation.
- To expand storage, use multiple narrow boards in a row or stagger them vertically to create a custom scarf wall that still saves floor space.
